pattern sourcebook

I live my life in patterns – the texture of sound in the harmonies and improvisations I weave into a melody or choir’s warp and weft; the layers of flavours in cooking which I add by smell and sensing; the messy colour and clutter of my living and working spaces, the way I write by collecting and combining words along the way. In my NGO capacity building work I bring together different people and ideas to form a coordinated, integrated whole. In social research and advocacy I analyse and translate ideas for different audiences and purposes.

Collages are another form of pattern, and I find myself playing with paper, fabric, trimmings, text, and graphic elements. I am also drawn to patterns in the physical environment.

In 2009 I travelled around Europe and north Africa with my husband – a kind of extended honeymoon. We visited Spain, Morocco, Portugal, France, Turkey and Egypt. Along the way I photographed the most beautiful patterns, including islamic tiles from Andalucia, the azules of Portugal and iznic tiles from Istanbul. The interior of mosques, mudejar and sultan palaces, heiroglyphics and art nouveau themes also captured me.

The Pattern Sourcebook project was born out of a desire to relive three fabulous months abroad. In each entry of this sourcebook I present a pattern, write about its context and my experience there and then create an art work using elements of the pattern.

an Indian textile adventure

April/May 2013. What a fabulous experience awaits ten of us who, as part of our fashion and textile design course, will be travelling to Delhi, Vrindavin and Pushka for 2 1/2 weeks. There we will source fabrics, learn traditional Indian embroidery and beading techniques, stay in an ashram and come home richer for the experience.
